People Helping People: A Reflection on International Credit Union Day 2026
There's something meaningful about taking time to show up for the people and places that make our communities feel like home. Sometimes that means helping students access the resources they need to succeed, lending a hand to care for a neighborhood space, or creating moments of joy for children and families.
For TAPCO, these moments reflect a belief that has guided the credit union movement for generations: People Helping People.
On October 15, we celebrated International Credit Union Day alongside BECU, Gesa Credit Union, O Bee Credit Union, and Sound Credit Union, putting that shared philosophy into practice through a day of giving, volunteering, and community connection.
The Difference We Can Make Together
Every community has needs that aren't always visible in our daily routines. A snack during an after-school program, reliable communication equipment for staff, or assistance with graduation expenses may seem like small details, but each plays a role in helping students feel supported and participate fully in their education.
Together, the five credit unions contributed $15,385 in support to Tacoma Public Schools, helping address these needs and ease some of the challenges students and educators face.
The day also brought us into the spaces where community connections grow. At Parks Tacoma's STAR Center, volunteers helped care for outdoor areas enjoyed by local families, while another group at the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound prepared decorations for an upcoming Halloween celebration.
Through these experiences, we were reminded that community support takes many forms, and each contribution helps create spaces where people feel welcomed, connected, and cared for.
Carrying the Cooperative Spirit Forward
International Credit Union Day gives us an opportunity to reflect on the values that bring credit unions together. Although we serve different memberships, we share a commitment to improving financial well-being and helping our communities thrive.
For us, that commitment lives in the relationships we build, the organizations we support, and the time we spend working alongside our neighbors. It's a reminder that meaningful community impact grows through cooperation, consistency, and a willingness to show up.
We're grateful to our fellow credit unions, Tacoma Public Schools, Parks Tacoma, Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound, and everyone who contributed their time and energy to the day.
As we carry the spirit of International Credit Union Day forward, we remain committed to creating pathways for people and communities to grow, knowing that the strongest connections are built when we care for one another.
