Partnering for Student Success: TAPCO, Wainwright, and TCC

We're proud to support local students through hands-on college and career exploration.

Building Futures Through Partnership

Now in its second year, TAPCO's partnership with Wainwright Intermediate School and Tacoma Community College (TCC) continues to create meaningful pathways for students to explore higher education and future careers. By introducing students to real-world environments and experiences, this initiative helps bridge the gap between classroom learning and lifelong success.

Real-World Learning Experiences

This year’s event brought Wainwright students to the TCC campus for a full day of immersive learning. The students were escorted and led by Richard Stirgus, TAPCO’s Vice President of Community Relations, and Jason Allen, TAPCO’s Chief Information Officer, along with support from the Fircrest Police Department.

The group walked from Wainwright Intermediate School to the TCC IT building, where they began their campus visit. Students participated in two hands-on IT activities, each 30 minutes long, offering an engaging introduction to technology and problem-solving in a college setting. From there, they explored additional academic departments, engaged in interactive experiences, and connected with faculty and staff.

They enjoyed snacks and lunch on campus before walking back to Wainwright, having spent the day discovering new possibilities and expanding their view of the future.

A highlight for many was the visit to TCC’s medical training area, where students showed high interest in the medical mannequins and simulations used in the healthcare programs.

Exploring Career Pathways

Students also had the opportunity to hear from a dynamic panel of guest speakers, each sharing 5–7 minute talks about their own career journeys and what life was like for them in middle school:

  • Zach Hansen, Attorney and Partner at Wattel & York

  • Justin Martin, President/CEO of TAPCO Credit Union

  • Dr. Spencer Garlick, Doctor of Optometry

  • Steven Salamone, Owner of Salamone’s Pizza in Tacoma and Slice Garden in Fircrest

Each speaker offered insight into the education, skills, and personal growth that shaped their careers. They highlighted the importance of both soft skills, like communication and persistence, and hard skills tied to specific industries. Their reflections helped students see how the choices they make now can shape their futures.

Strengthening Community Ties

This collaboration is a reflection of TAPCO’s deep commitment to education and community impact. Working closely with local schools and colleges allows us to empower the next generation with the tools, exposure, and mentorship they need to grow and succeed.

Looking Ahead

We look forward to continuing this partnership and expanding opportunities for students to explore their interests and potential. Together with community leaders and educators, we’re building a stronger, more informed South Sound—one student at a time.
