Each July, Tacoma and Pierce County celebrate Pride Month, a time to reflect on and honor the strength, joy, and contributions of the LGBTQ+ community. Across our region, community centers, schools, city buildings, and businesses raise the Pride flag as a visible sign of inclusion and solidarity. At TAPCO, we are proud to be part of that tradition.
On July 1, TAPCO raised the Pride flag at all of our branches across Pierce County. At our Main Branch, staff and community members gathered for a special flag-raising ceremony that included remarks from John Cummings, a longtime Fircrest resident, community advocate, attorney, and judge pro tempore.
John spoke passionately about the importance of long-term, meaningful support for the LGBTQ+ community, not just during Pride Month, but every day of the year. His message served as a powerful reminder that inclusion should never be performative or fleeting. At TAPCO, that philosophy is embedded in who we are.
Founded in 1934 by nine individuals who were excluded from the traditional banking system, TAPCO has always stood for equity, access, and belonging. That legacy lives on today through our continued commitment to serving all people with respect and compassion, and by creating spaces where every person feels safe and seen.
As we look ahead to Tacoma Pride Festival on July 12 at Wright Park, we invite our community to keep the spirit of Pride going strong. Whether you’re a longtime member or new to TAPCO, know that you belong here, just as you are.
We are grateful to everyone who joined us for this year’s Pride flag raising and look forward to continuing our journey toward a more inclusive, affirming future for all.
